On 10th January, 1915, the 1st Devonshire battalion of 14 Brigade, 5th Division, moved into the front line at Wulverghem in Belgium where they remained until relieved on 16th January on which date they went into billets in Neuve Eglise. On 14th January, the day on which Arthur Baker was killed, the battalion was heavily shelled and men had to be dug out of their collapsed trenches in the support line. There was also heavy rifle fire on the front line resulting in further casualties. |
